Pursuing Post-Secondary Studies at Vancouver Island University and the University of Victoria

VANCOUVER – The Pacific Salmon Foundation announced the results of its annual Stewardship Community Bursary Program today and three of the winners are from Victoria – Carson Jewitt (who is attending Vancouver Island University), Matt Miller (who is attending the University of Victoria) and Brian Timmer (who is at Vancouver Island University).

“Our bursary program awards students with volunteer experience in environmental stewardship, because salmon conservation starts with volunteer ‘steamkeepers’ at the community level.,” said Dr. Brian Riddell, president and CEO of the Pacific Salmon Foundation. “Many of these students may move onto leadership roles and it’s important that they have a deep understanding of the critical role communities play in protecting salmon.”

The Program provides cash awards to post-secondary students currently enrolled in their second year or later of a salmon conservation or aquatic stewardship program of study. This was another good year for the bursary program, with the Foundation awarding a total of $29,000 to 14 post-secondary students in British Columbia. Since 2005, the bursary program has awarded almost $138,000 to 96 students entering environmental fields.

The bursaries are made possible through fundraising by the Pacific Salmon Foundation, as well as support from Trans Mountain Corporation. Donors can support student bursaries with tax-deductible donations to the Pacific Salmon Foundation on-line at psf.ca, by phone at (604) 664-7664, or by mail at 300-1682 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver B.C.
