Cenovus Energy became a major supporter of the Pacific Salmon Foundation’s Salish Sea Marine Survival Project (SSMSP) in 2015 with a donation of $100,000. About 20 years ago, the Strait of Georgia saw Coho, Chinook and Steelhead suddenly decline to about one-tenth of past peak levels – taking with them about $750 million in annual revenues for communities surrounding the Strait. The SSMSP is a five-year research and restoration initiative that partners with community groups who are experts in the marine environment, First Nations, NGO’s, academia and government, in identifying what is limiting our salmon and the complex ecosystem they support.
