“Links” Western Red Cedar and Cypress Carving
Donated by: David Maki

This 46” round panel is carved from western red cedar and cypress and is titled “Links”. The panel features a Southern Resident Killer Whale, a Chinook salmon, Pacific herring and bull kelp. Each element is carved to approximately ¼ of it’s real life size.

David created this piece to illustrate that these species are all crucially linked and they are all at risk.

It features the Southern Resident Killer Whale “Onyx” (L87), a unique member of J Pod who was born in 1992 as the offspring of “Olympia” (L32). After Olympia passed away in 2005, Onyx travelled with J and K pods until he was ultimately adopted by J Pod. Onyx and the other resident killer whales require Chinook salmon for survival. Chinook salmon, in turn, require Pacific herring for food. Bull kelp is essential to the Pacific herring as cover from predators and as spawning grounds. Each of these vital links have experienced recent declines.

Port Alberni-based carver and artist, David Maki, draws inspiration from the oceans, rivers, and lakes that hide some of the most dynamic creatures in existence. Dave pours hours of time and research into each piece that he creates in support of organizations such as the Pacific Salmon Foundation.
