George C. Reifel graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1974 with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in finance and urban land economics. He graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1976 with a MBA.
He has been actively engaged since graduation in the development, investment and brokerage of real estate, primarily in BC, Alberta and the Western US. He is a founding partner of the Reifel Cooke Group (1986), founding shareholder and director of Invan Mortgage Corporation (1980-present) and a director (2000-present) and chairman (2007-present) of British Pacific Properties Limited. He is also a licensed real estate agent.
In addition to membership in a number of organizations and clubs, he serves as a volunteer director for a number of other not-for-profit organizations including Ducks Unlimited Canada (1982-present, national president 1996-1998, $80 million annual budget, 400 FTE’s), The Nature Trust of British Columbia (1993-present), Canadian Cancer Society (past chair, BC Corporate Campaign), United Way (past chair, real estate and finance division), Hernando Island Holdings Limited (1983-2004), The Vancouver Club (1986-1991, president 1990), The Tyee Club of British Columbia (2002-present), Institute for Wetland & Waterfowl Research (1991-2001) and the British Columbia Waterfowl Society (1976-present) which has managed the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary since it was created in 1963. He was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for volunteer leadership of numerous conservation organizations.
