June 5, 2003 - Dr. Routledge Updates Conference Attendees on Rivers/Smith Inlets Salmon Run
(17kb, PDF)
Dr. Rick Routledge of Simon Fraser University updated guests at Pacific Salmon Foundations Welcoming Reception of their Common Vision Workshop on his research into finding out why sockeye salmon runs in Rivers/Smith Inlets have been nearly wiped out.
I dont accept DFOs position, said Dr. Routledge in his opening statement. Its my understanding that the federal government believes that the decline in salmon runs in the Inlets is a natural downturn and will likely reverse in time. Their recommendation is that we curtail fishing, maintain monitoring and wait for the upturn. In my opinion, this is the worst conservation disaster that has occurred in British Columbia since the early 1900s. We need to know what has caused it.

PSF/PSEFS Progress Report

Project
Profile: Stuart Island
Stuart Island salmon fisheries
have declined considerably
in recent years due to
weakness in target stocks
originating from within
and outside the local
area. Many local salmon
spawning populations have
been seriously eroded
and some habitats are
in poor condition.
Until now there has been
no overall long-term plan
for the various interests
to work together to rehabilitate
salmon stocks and habitats
and thereby increase fishing
opportunities. The Pacific
Salmon Foundation has
such a plan underway for
the Stuart Island Area
that can be implemented
primarily by volunteers
and local First Nations.
It is already attracting
funding support and active
involvement from both
private and public sectors.
The Foundation is working
to establish partnerships
with all interests in
developing and implementing
the plan. As new knowledge
and techniques are developed
as the plan unfolds, it
must be adaptive and evolve
over time. This new initiative
is already being touted
as a model that could
be applied to other areas
in British Columbia.
